Juveniles & Guns: A bad mix that doesn't go away easily

Far too often people think that a crime committed as a juvenile will just go away as they grow up and become an adult. Wrong! It can stay on your record forever.

Here's an example of a local juvenile who has a long hard road ahead of him.

Over nearby the Millenia Mall, a 14 year-old boy was caught with an armed handgun. He was spotted at a condo next to the mall and was reported by neighbors as appearing "suspicious looking". When the police arrived they asked the teen if he was carrying any weapons or needles. After the youth said no, the police frisked him and found a hand gun in his pocket. The gun contained a magazine with two bullets and one in the chamber. While the gun was not stolen, the teen didn't exactly make it clear as to how he obtained the weapon.

He was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed fireman and unlawful possession of a firearm. So what's next for anyone who might be in this boy's legal predicament?

When a minor commits a crime, it can stay on their record for the rest of their life. We are talking about ruining a potential college academic career and hampering future employment.

The intial issue with a minor's arrest is the fact that they will either remain in secure detention for 21 days (perhaps even longer) or they be released into a home detention.

This is where being a former juvenile prosecutor comes in handy. Our law firm understands how the system works and what the best defense is for the child.

The juvenile system is a much different beast than the adult criminal one.
