Aggravated Battery with a deadly weapon

You may hear about arrests for "aggravated battery with a deadly weapon", but usually not like this. Forget about guns, baseball bats and knives. A woman was arrested yesterday after she allegedly attacked a couple in Daytona Beach with a machete. She was charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The victims, both from Jacksonville, were in Daytona visiting a relative. Both victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital and released. This bizarre incident occurred when an argument began inside the house over some "family issues". The woman who was eventually arrested had an "issue with the conversation" and both victims tried to "explain that the comments were not directed at her'', but that didn't stop her from allegedly picking up the machete and going on a wild attack.

She is being held on $20,000 bond. Of course judging from the evidence and witnesses, the odds don't seem to be in her favor. She will need a skillful defense lawyer to get her out of this mess. Under FL law, Aggravated Battery is a second degree felony. The penalties can be quite harsh, with up to 15 years in prison or 15 years of probation. The defendant could also expect up to $10,000 in fines. When there is serious bodily injury, a defendant will also likely be ordered to pay for medical bills, depending on how serious the injuries were. This woman's best defense right now is stating that she was defending herself from attack.
