How many cop shows have you seen where the suspect says “I’m not saying another word until my attorney gets here!”? Who would have thought that TV gets some part of the law correct.
Here are just a few reasons why you shouldn’t confess to the police, especially without your lawyer present…Even if you haven’t committed the crimes in question, the authorities will do their best to catch you in any little lie. You may think that by talking to the police they will understand you and be on your side, but their ultimate goal is to find a way to pin you to the crime. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that the police do NOT have the authority to make a deal with you or grant you leniency in exchange for your statement.
Locally, an example of a confession took place recently. Over in Volusia County, detectives had been investigating a number of armed robberies stretching back to the beginning of August. They believed all the break-ins were connected. Now six teens are facing serious charges involving at least eight armed robberies. The big break came a few nights back when three masked men were seen running across a parking lot following the robbery of a DeLand business. They were arrested and one of those suspects started confessing to all the gang’s crimes. Thanks to the confession, investigators aren’t ruling out more arrests as they continue to gather more evidence tying these young men to the crimes.
