Enrique Iglesias facing suspended license, obstruction charges

After being stopped by the Florida Highway Patrol last month in Miami-Dade, famed singer Enrique Iglesias now faces charges of driving with a suspended license and obstruction, according to news reports.

The incident occurred May 6 after troopers pulled over a Cadillac Escalade on Interstate 95 that was driving north in express lanes that had been closed. Apparently, although Iglesias was driving when a trooper pulled over the SUV, the singer purportedly climbed into the backseat of the vehicle while a passenger moved from the passenger seat into the driver's seat. Iglesias then apparently moved from the back seat to the passenger seat of the vehicle. The trooper who pulled over the SUV witnessed the individuals swapping places and contends that Iglesias was behind the wheel when the traffic stop occurred. The passenger said he did not know why he and Iglesias switched seats.

Both Iglesias and his passenger, who was also charged with nonviolent obstruction, were placed into custody, and Iglesias apparently invoked his right to remain silent during the incident. The two men were later released under the condition they would appear in court July 10 to contest the charges. Each man has pleaded not guilty.

Reports do not mention whether or not either man was impaired at the time of the traffic stop and subsequent arrest, but the current charges could have serious legal implications if the singer is found guilty. Iglesias' attorney was contacted for an official comment but had not responded at the time of the report.

Just as the famous performer and his companion remained silent and deferred questions to their lawyers, anyone charged with driving with a suspended license or other traffic violation would do well to consult with an attorney experienced in traffic laws. An attorney can advise a suspect of his or her rights, review the case and devise an effective legal strategy to contest the charges.
