Clearwater Beach shootings leave unanswered questions

Just because it's a holiday weekend doesn't mean that lawyers shouldn't be aware of what is going on. At any time, that surprise phone call could be for you. A potential new client, new case, new challenge. Some lawyers in the Clearwater area should understand.

On Memorial Day, a group of men were held on multiple charges after two people were shot on Clearwater Beach. Police didn't initially arrest the eight people involved, but they did say that it was possible these suspects could face weapons charges. The local police found multiple guns.

How did this all get started? As always, with a stupid confrontation which usually leads to tragic results. Monday evening these shootings sprang up from arguments between groups of people. The first shots were fired by a group of people in a parking garage near the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort and Spa, while the other group was in the street. At least two people were shot. One in the hand and the other in the groin. The person who was shot in the hand fled the scene.

While the cops sort out the mess, those who are held in custody will need an attorney as soon as possible. Any violent crime using a firearm can carry stiff penalties if you are convicted. It's important to find out if any of them have a concealed weapons permit. After that, it's all about finding out if the weapon was fired in the act of self-defense. Once all the facts of the case are out there, an attorney will be able to do their best to get the charges reduced.
