A DUI can result in serious, harsh penalties for drivers

Florida drivers know that getting pulled over for a suspected DUI is no joke. However, the stories surrounding these offenses can sometimes serve as humorous lessons to all drivers. A DUI can result in a simple accident in a best-case scenario and death in a worst-case scenario.

For example, a young Florida man was recently pulled over after he ran over a sign that said “Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over.” The sign had been put in place by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office to serve as a warning and deterrent for people who were thinking about driving under the influence. They were trying to create safer streets.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the young man inside of a damaged car a short distance away from the downed sign. When asked to explain what happened, the young man said that he’d been speaking on the phone with a friend when he crashed. He also offered that he’d been studying with a friend prior to getting into the car to drive home. After speaking with him, it became clear to the officers that he wasn’t even aware that he had hit the sign. A breathalyzer test showed that he had a blood-alcohol level of .166, twice the legal limit in Florida. The driver faced a DUI charge, and he was also ordered to pay for the destruction of the sign.

Getting a DUI is a very serious issue. It could result in the suspension of one’s driver’s license or even jail time depending on the severity of the offense. Someone who has been arrested for a DUI may benefit by working with an attorney who has experience in handling these types of cases.
