DUI Hit & Run

A "hit & run" is considered when someone leaves the scene of an accident. As serious a crime as that can be, it is even worse when alcohol plays a part in the accident. Over the past few years, Florida has seen a major increase fatal "hit & run" crashes, where the fleeing drivers are suspected of DUI.

There are many reasons why driver flee the scene of an accident. Not having the proper registration or insurance papers, as well as panicking, seem to be the most common ones. But the possibility of driving while under the influence has become, unfortunately, a popular reason.

Whether or not you have had a few drinks, you must never leave the scene of the accident. By doing so, you are just compounding your legal troubles. Right after you are involved in an auto accident, call the police. By remaining calm throughout the ordeal, you won't seem suspicious. Sticking with the calm theme, exchange vehicle information with the other party involved. It helps to also take pictures of the accident scene and the damage done to both vehicles. If you show remorse and concern it will take the focus off you.

With all of this being said, it's human nature for someone to hesitate for a moment before doing the right thing. Seems easier to just drive away, especially if you have had a few drinks. But over the last decade and a half, FL law enforcement has come down hard on drivers who flee the scene of an accident, and even harder when those drivers are discovered to have been drunk at the time.

Don't ruin your life by doubling down on mistakes. Whether you are sober or not, stay at the scene of the accident and then hire a skilled attorney. By doing so, you are making sure you don't face extra punishment.
